Jesse didn't want his father's money, who had inherited great wealth. He hated the city life in San Francisco when the family moved there from the mountains as a boy. He left as soon as he could get a horse at fifteen years old and rode him back to the mountains. Jesse took only his grandfather, Brushy Bill's six gun and Hawken Rifle that his father gave him and some supplies, and a little money. He had fond memories of all the hunting and fishing in the mountains with his father as a boy at Butte Creek cabin. That was the life he wanted.
