Ride a Proud Horse

I liked this book- Morgenroth writes books that you want to read cover to cover. A girl struggles to make a life for herself and her father, and is really forced to grow up and become an adult because her father refuses to. Lots of horsey details but very good character development too.

coming-of-age horse story

This is a classic coming-of-age horse story. Morgenroth does it better with "Last Junior Year," but "Ride a Proud Horse" is still a good read set on the background of the hunter/jumper equestrian community in the 1970s. The characters and situations don't quite have the depth I might like, but there are many very well-written scenes. Our young heroine has a flaky father who has dragged her all over the east coast, buying and selling questionable horses and running a small riding school, after her mother was killed in a riding accident. Her own horse, Spanky, a youngster she's trained herself, is the only reliable constant in her life.Out on the trail one day, she befriends a boy from the nearby Big Name Stable. And shortly, over her intense objections ('all those people are too snooty to ride well, and rely totally on their money'), her father pressures her to take some lessons with the Big Name Trainer there. Her first lesson is one of the strongest parts of the book.Over time, she learns that the world is not as simple as she thinks it is, and that she's got a lot to learn about riding. But she also learns of her own inner strength, and gains her independence.
