First published in 1975, this favorite is back in print. When he's discovered after six seconds of being on TV, George Stable is groomed to be the hot new singing sensation, The Boy Next Door. But George's dad has other plans for him for the summer, so George must weave a web of deception in order to get his music career off the ground.
Being a long time fan of "The Teddy Bear Habit", I was thrilled to discover this sequel. The story was fast-paced and funny, although there were a couple of inconsistencies with the original tale. I never knew that George's father was seeing a woman at the office, so this must have been a recent development in the year between the two stories. Also, I found myself wishing for more scenes with George's father and Stanky and felt the ending was a bit abrupt without them. Funny story as was the first, since George never seems to know when to tell the truth. James Lincoln Collier tells lively tales about realistic kids in believable predicaments. His books are still fairly timeless considering that they are more than thirty years told. Parents should explain why every adult in the books smoked back then.
