The original Chinese version of this collection was composed in the forms of the classical metrical patterns, utilizing 46 of them. The author, a native of Xi'an, China, began writing poetry while pursuing doctoral studies in the United States. Employing traditional Chinese poetic forms to depict modern experiences in a foreign setting (such as the life of a graduate student), the author strives to capture that ineffable quality in the ancient stanzas, as well as judiciously incorporating imagery advocated in the modern era. His teaching career in Xi'an and Taiwan is also vividly reflected in some poems. In translating the works into English, the author strives to faithfully convey the syntactic structures and rhythmic characteristics of the originals, which leads to a summary of theoretical nature. While English-speaking readers may not be able to fully appreciate the original metrical nuances, they are still able to engage with the Oriental imagery and philosophical insights presented, or to explore the alluded cultural atmosphere and historical landmarks of the author's hometown, Xi'an.
