As flames continue to burn for a sixth day, fuelled by high winds, Greece has staged its greatest evacuation ever, removing thousands of people from the towns and tourist regions of Rhodes.

According to the county's fire authority, fires continued to spread unchecked on three fronts around the Aegean island, requiring the evacuation of 19,000 people, mostly tourists staying in hotels. The remaining 16,000 individuals were transported by boat, leaving 16,000 on land. On Sunday afternoon, it was announced that "It is the biggest operation to safely transport residents and tourists that has ever been carried out in our country."
