This book begins by considering the varied meanings of the concept of 'Rhetoric'. It discusses rhetorical theory and practice in Greece and Rome. It then continues by tracing the concept of Rhetoric in relation to literary development primarily in English. It also considers the negative implications the concept has had in post -Elizabethan and seventeenth century times. It concludes by considering modern revivals of the concept. I found this small book to be one of the most impressive in the 'Critical Concepts'series. Dixon outlines the varied definitions of Rhetoric connected with speaking before an audience, influencing an audience or reader. He goes into its uses in legal and political contexts. He provides insightful guides into the oratorial theory and practice of Cicero and Quintillian. He discusses how Rhetoric was a fundamental in the liberal Arts, and in classic and medieval education. He analyzes in various ways one of the central concerns in regard to 'rhetoric' the relation between' thought' and 'language'. This leads to the consideration of the pejorative sense of 'rhetoric' that in which false uses of language, embellishments and verbal decoration conceal corrupted thought. He concludes with a consideration of a certain revival in the study of rhetorical practices in our day. A highly enjoyable and instructive 'read'.
