Rewriting Buddhism: From Renunciation To Radical Acceptance
What if the last attachment is wanting a way out?
The Theravada path is usually taught as an exit: seven more births, then one, then none. But in his very first teaching, the Buddha named a craving for non-existence, the quiet wish for things simply to stop. It is the easiest craving to mistake for wisdom, and for many sincere practitioners it may be the last attachment standing.
Rewriting Buddhism keeps the classical map: the four noble truths, the three characteristics, the four stages of awakening, and the ten fetters. What changes is the direction it points. Not out of life, but so fully into it that no one is left standing outside, wishing to leave.
Drawing on more than twenty years of contemplative practice, including time as a monk and over a thousand hours of formal meditation training, Zachary A. Perlman offers what he calls the Path of Total Return. Inside you will find:
A close reading of the three cravings, and why the craving for non-existence hides so well inside renunciationThe four stages of awakening reread as stages of deepening willingnessCompassion without a compassionate one, taking the Diamond Sutra's warning seriouslyPractices including the Willingness Inquiry, Contemplation of Infinite Return, and the immeasurables without othersGuidance for household life, ethics, and dyingAn honest reply to the strongest Theravada objectionsA Pali glossary, a twelve-week practice program, and guided meditation scripts
Every chapter ends with a practice, because these ideas are meant to be tested on the cushion, not simply agreed with.
This book is for meditators who have felt a quiet tightness beneath their letting go, and who suspect that freedom might look less like leaving and more like finally saying yes.
