Max Brand, just one of the pseudonyms of Fredrick Faust, is an author I either immensely like or most assuredly hate. I did not like this book which was originally published as Ronicky Doone's Reward back in the 1920's using the David Manning name. Fredrick Faust's "west" came entirely from his mind, as he wanted nothing to do with horses or the wild county. In fact he wrote most of his "westerns" as well as other genres from a villa in Italy. And if you are a student of classic Greek mythology you can see most of his stories are actually re-tellings of them. I suggest you pass on this one. Sorry. There is however one caveat about this book. If you can locate a first edition of the Pocket book from 1977 there was a misprint on the title page of that book which lists the author as Zane Grey. And that makes, for me, the book worth owning as Zane Grey is my favorite author.
