When we come to faith in Jesus Christ, we become a brand new person. We are changed from being spiritually dead to God, Jesus, and Holy Spirit, to being alive through Christ. That transformation is instant. The transformation of our soul (will, mind, and emotions), however, is not automatic or instant. We are admonished by the apostle Paul to undergo a transformation by renewing our minds (Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will.)
We will live a very limiting and frustrating life in Christ, if our minds are not renewed. Old habits, thought patterns, and behaviors hang around in our soul and we will repeat many of the same patterns we had before our life in Christ. We are often unaware of this condition of our souls and it takes others and Holy Spirit to make us aware of our self defeating condition.
The million dollar question is, how do we renew our minds to the point where we are completely transformed in our soul, specifically our minds. This is not often clear from the instructions given to us in the Bible, although the path to a renewed mind is contained in it.
