Book Overview

A dark and electrifying novel about addiction, fanaticism, and what might exist on the other side of life.

In a small New England town, over half a century ago, a shadow falls over a small boy playing with his toy soldiers. Jamie Morton looks up to see a striking man, the new minister. Charles Jacobs, along with his beautiful wife, will transform the local church. The men and boys are all a bit in love with Mrs. Jacobs; the women and girls feel the same about Reverend Jacobs--including Jamie's mother and beloved sister, Claire. With Jamie, the Reverend shares a deeper bond based on a secret obsession. When tragedy strikes the Jacobs family, this charismatic preacher curses God, mocks all religious belief, and is banished from the shocked town.

Jamie has demons of his own. Wed to his guitar from the age of thirteen, he plays in bands across the country, living the nomadic lifestyle of bar-band rock and roll while fleeing from his family's horrific loss. In his mid-thirties--addicted to heroin, stranded, desperate--Jamie meets Charles Jacobs again, with profound consequences for both men. Their bond becomes a pact beyond even the Devil's devising, and Jamie discovers that revival has many meanings.

This rich and disturbing novel spans five decades on its way to the most terrifying conclusion Stephen King has ever written. It's a masterpiece from King, in the great American tradition of Frank Norris, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgar Allan Poe.

The worst by King I've read.

I've read a ton by Stephen King over the years and I must admit that this one finally broke my respect for him. While I could go on about his infantile grasp of theology and the slothful pace of the book, I think I'll just cut to the chase Have you seen the movie Phantasm? Because if you have this book will seem eerily familiar to you. Seriously, it reads like a sequel to the movie and not even a very original one. It's not really a straight knock-off, but it is lazy and phoned in. I expect better out of King.

As usual, captivating events captured by Stephen King.

Unable to put the book down, once I began reading it! Continous events. If one has not read any Stephen King books (or does like me) I highly recommend.

King is King

I'm a bigger fan.

Good read

I enjoyed this book a lot There are some unnecessary plot lines and details but overall another enjoyable king book

Revival

This was one of Kings more recent books I hadn't read yet. Honestly, a few of his newer novels have not impressed me. So I kept hearing about the crazy ending of Revival. Finally grabbed a copy. Revival starts out in the 60s and it was just an amazing beginning. Takes you right back to your youth and the amazing days of summer. Jaime meets the new minister of the little church in the country when he is 6 years old. The rest of the story spans the next 50 plus years. The ending was indeed horrifying, but to me, a little predictable. The ending didn't knock my socks off. With that being said, it was good, and it was scary, as King knows how to scare us. Aside from the creeps, King also can tug at our heart strings. I loved this book, I loved it a lot. Well done Mr. K.!
