Revelation: Revised and Updated - A Commentary for Bible Study and Sermon Preparation

The inspiration for writing this commentary came while leading a Wednesday night Bible study on the book of Revelation. The church wanted a verse-by-verse in depth Bible study. This led me into preparation, reading over twenty-seven excellent sources every week. Then I discovered the majority omitted sections of chapters, and others provided an abundance of material that would never be useful in Bible study. More research was required. I wished for a commentary that covered every verse in a chapter while maintaining a balance of content helpful to the reader. That is when I decided to write this book. This commentary would have helped me and will help others.

It is also intended for the Christian who has heard two or more interpretations on one text and wondered to him or herself, "OK. But are there other interpretations? Before I decide upon one, I would like to know more." This commentary endeavors to answer that question. It was written for pastors and the lay person who wants to know more.

It is a verse-by-verse exposition which also considers the meaning within Revelation's broader literary context. For each verse or verses, a summary of what preceded and follows is provided. This enables the reader to understand the verse within its context.

Apocalyptic images (symbolism) based upon the Old Testament are explained to bring clarity to the text. Occasionally there are Greek word studies and Greek grammar discussed. Those who read the Greek New Testament should find these helpful. Readers who do not know Greek will understand the word studies, but the grammar sections are not necessary to follow the rest of the commentary. In the exposition is a discussion of Revelation's theological message and literary analysis.

Then follows a brief discussion of four different methods of interpretation. First is how Revelation was understood by Christians in the first century. Next is an interpretation as understood through the lens of church history. Third is the futurist interpretation(s). The last explores eternal truths in Revelation which are repeated throughout history and ultimately fulfilled prior to history's conclusion.

It is written in a way that is logical and easily understood. An ideal companion for personal study and as a resource for Bible study and sermon preparation.
