Revealing School: Discover what school is really doing to your kids

Have you ever wondered why the elites in this country are shelling out $30,000, $40,000 or even $50,000 a year for elite prep schools? Think about that. Over 12 years, that's half a million dollars... This description may be from another edition of this product.

Paradigm Shattering!

Raising Children for Greatness series, book 1 ~ Revealing School I’m hoping to review all four books in this series within a short time frame for reference by all of you hard researching parents out there. As a homeschool graduate myself, currently homeschooling my five daughters, I see myself as a bit of an “educational philosophy geek”. Books about how children and adults learn, and why they should and should not be trained in particular ways fascinate me. After having had my views on education majorly shifted by reading books from greats like John Taylor Gatto, Susan Wise Bauer, Oliver DeMille, and a number of others, I honestly approached this series expecting to read a fresh spin on the same information that’s floating around all over the homeschool world. I was wrong. While some aspects of the books echo familiar themes, the author comes at them from a very different perspective than I have seen previously, and there are many aspects that I had not seen covered before at all. With a background of personally attending many different schools of different styles, Britton Latulippe intersperses his own (mostly horror) stories of school experiences as illustrations in his thorough indictment of the public-school model. He also explores the historical background of public school, from Plato, through its many iterations, to today’s version, and contrasts it to the educational model of elite prep schools, one of which he attended for part of high school, with very different illustrating stories. This book is raw and honest in a way that I have not encountered before within the educational genre. In other words, the author does not shy away from sensitive subjects, and even crude and offensive quotes are added to back up the claims made about the real roots of, and the actual current conditions in public schools. Some sections of the book are extremely hard to read, but I believe that for many of those it was intended to reach, the actual quotes are a necessary level of detail. Without them the author might just sound like, “another crazy alarmist conspiracy theorist”. That being said, once you’re convinced, I recommend skipping the quotes from books in public elementary school libraries. I have never read such sickening material, and I hope to never encounter it again. To sum up, while I can’t actually say that I enjoyed reading this book, I believe that it is a vitally important work which anyone raising children should be familiar with. Thankfully it sets up the reader for the next three books in the series; Education, Character, and Power, all FAR more positive experiences to read, and likely of equal value once the commonly understood paradigms have been SHATTERED by “Revealing School”. Content Considerations: Not for the sensitive reader. Contains bullying, fighting, bloodletting, eugenics, mass-suicide, murder, very explicit excerpts from 4th-5th grade library books…many disturbing themes.
