At the family reunion in honor of her grandfather's ninetieth birthday, Maxine Phillips finds herself in possession of a Bible, passed down in the Phillips family for six generations. It contains mysterious markings on some of its pages. Maxine's cousin Charles had always told her the markings held secrets to power and riches. There were stories of violence and death coming to those who had tried to decode the meaning of those marks. He insisted the stains on the Bible's worn cover were the blood of four men who fought over the Bible a century-and-a-half ago. Her grandfather assured Maxine the stories were just fables created to frighten children, and that the marks were of no consequence. Nevertheless, she takes the Bible to her friend, Oliver Saxon, a professor of religion and an expert in religious antiquities. As they work closely together to uncover the Bible's secrets, they begin to suspect that the old stories are true. Does the Bible really carry a deadly secret? Their answer comes as Maxine is kidnapped and ransomed for the Bible. Oliver finds himself standing on a wharf, next to a ship owned by a drug and human trafficking cartel. Holding the Bible, he confronts Maxine's kidnappers.
