An 'innocent' killing takes place in a cane field under the cover of darkness. It sets in motion a sequence of intriguing events. The story is set in Barbados, a newly independent nation still grappling with a legacy of 'race' and a colonial history that drew the lines between 'classes'. The story is told of a woman who gives life to a daughter who will become a shining star in her country's political landscape. Furthermore, Return to Little England is about a middle-aged man returning to Barbados having spent most of his adult life in America. He is now indoctrinated with America's binary fixation on Race. He reconnects with an old love from his teenage years, one who is considered white in the society in which she lives. Their future together is impacted by that deadly event at the beginning of the story, the event that took place in a cane field under the cover of darkness.
