In 2373, fourteen-year-old Jahan 'Jay' Jumander, an orphan living in the Indus Unit, with a penchant for adventure and archaeology decides to embark on an adventure with her friends into the depths of the Makran desert. Jay hopes of finding the ruins of Gedrosia, a place where her parents, both renowned archaeologists, had mysteriously disappeared.

Jay, her friend Erol, and their loyal humanoid Boro, follow the clues left behind by Jay's parents to trace their way to Gedrosia. As their journey takes them through a hostile desert, Jay and Boro get separated from Erol and end up in an underground world. This world is no other than Gedrosia.

But Gedrosia is no ancient ruin, as Jay believed it to be. In fact, it is a top-secret facility set up by the Interregional Union for the Conservation of Humans and Bots (the 'CHB') that operates a sanctuary to preserve biodiversity in a world that faces mass extinction. There are more secrets to this subterranean sanctuary than meets the eye.

As the story continues to unfold, Jay and Boro discover that Gedrosia is being run in fact, by the Syndicate, which is conducting illegal cybernetics research on human subjects. The stakes continue to rise as Jay and Boro are trapped in Gedrosia and soon discover that the Syndicate is developing an advanced line of reproductive cyborgs to replace humans - their solution to human extinction - which will catapult the world into another war.

Now, it's up to Jay and her friends to find a way to escape while exposing the Syndicate once and for all. And for Jay to come to terms with her family's complicated past.
