A collection of essays highlighting the ways a local congregation could address and meet needs within the church and in the broader community. It's been a joy to see the progress each of you has made throughout the semester in our Rhetoric and Research courses. You now hold the culminating project in your hands, a collection of essays that reflect your call to ministry and your passion for people. Although it's an early accomplishment in your academic career, you're on your way to observing needs and finding solutions for the congregations you care for in your ministry. My hope is that as you develop your critical thinking skills, you'll combine the analysis and research you've learned this semester in class with spiritual insight to become not only a knowledgeable minister, but also a person who is wise in all your ways. The following collection contains all the students' essays that were submitted by the assignment deadline. The Table of Contents is arranged alphabetically by last name so that no one essay is given preference. Very little editing of the individual essays was done, so any errors are the responsibility of each author. The topics of the essays range from social issues faced by congregations who are looking for ways to reach their communities, to problems within the church that pastors and boards may face as they lead the church. Although the list of topics reflects many issues you'll face in ministry, the number of needs and problems are not an indication that your future work in building God's Kingdom will be overwhelmingly difficult or unrewarding. On the contrary, being able to see needs and identify problems are indications that you are leading God's people who are normal human beings. As you work to solve the needs and issues in ministry, you and your congregation have the potential to experience God's grace and power in your midst.
