Resuscitation of a Hanged Man

By Denis Johnson

A soul-searching and darkly funny beach-town noir, from the beloved writer of Train Dreams and Jesus' Son.

In the bleak of November, Lenny English washes up in Provincetown, on the farthest point of Cape Cod. Recovering from a recent suicide attempt, his soul suspended in its own off-season, he takes a job as a third-shift DJ at the local radio station, with a little private detective work on the side for his boss. His first assignment is to search for a missing painter--whose personal history seems to mirror his own. Soon enough, his hours are divided between two primary obsessions: the increasingly complex case and an ill-advised affair with a lesbian townie. In pursuit of the artist--and love, and redemption--Lenny will resort to great and desperate measures to revive himself, and his faith in the world.

Resuscitation of a Hanged Man is a beach-town noir for the ages, with the exquisite balance of darkness, humor, and sensitivity Denis Johnson could always do best.
