The principle of the 'Responsibility to Protect' establishes a duty of solidarity on the part of the international community to protect people worldwide from humanitarian disasters that are not of natural origin. The concept thus represents an important foundation for the implementation of international human rights protection. Germany is one of the strongest advocates of the Responsibility to Protect within the United Nations.
