Reservoir Pattern Surveillance of Mature Floods Using Streamlines

Originally published in 2017 and followed by a third edition in 2018, this fourth edition marks a significant expansion, showcasing recent advancements in the streamline-based reservoir surveillance framework. Streamline surveillance models explicitly incorporate historical well rates, 3D stratigraphic and structural geological descriptions, well paths and perforations, and fluid properties-all into a physics-based numerical model-to then quantify dynamic injector-producer pairs, injector-centered patterns, and 3D remaining fluids-in-place distributions. Streamline surveillance has now been extended to enable forecasting directly from historical data in a truly data-driven approach. And like traditional reservoir simulation models, surveillance models can also be coupled with ensembles of geological models to generate probabilistic forecasts and probabilistic fluid-in-place maps-key tools for risk quantification, even in the routine management of mature floods. In the previous editions, we included published papers to allow readers easy access to the original sources. To maintain conciseness and prevent page numbering conflicts, we have omitted them in this edition. Instead, we have included a dedicated chapter of published case studies to highlight the effectiveness of the streamline surveillance framework. With its enhanced capabilities, streamline-based reservoir surveillance is a compelling solution for managing mature conventional floods. It offers a flexible modeling approach rooted in solid reservoir engineering principles, while sidestepping many of the challenges and complexities associated with traditional reservoir simulation. Streamline-based reservoir surveillance is not a substitute for reservoir simulation, but a complementary and agile tool to support continuous, active management of mature conventional floods.
