Based on the true story of German-born Dieter Dengler, who dreamed of being a test pilot and thus made his way to America, where he joined the military in pursuit of his obsession to fly. On his first mission in Vietnam, he is shot down and captured by Vietcong guerrillas.
This movie is an exaggerated version of “Little Dieter Needs to Fly” (1997).

This is a blatant Hollywood (Written and directed by Werner Herzog) movie version of a small fraction of “Little Dieter Needs to Fly” (1997), also written and directed by Werner Herzog.
It is just as well that you watch this exaggeration first, as it will disappoint you after viewing the real thing.
It is a story of a U.S. Navy pilot who is shot down on one of the secret 1965 bombing missions over Laos during the Vietnam War and his process of escape. Even though based on a real person, Dieter Dengler, it has shades of “The Bridge on the River Kwai” (1957). There are a few tear-jerker moments. Cute ending.
They did take the time and energy to film on location in Thailand. I only saw a small portion of Laos in 1967, but it looks real for the time being. The part I saw had more trees and less swamp.
