Set in rural Bedfordshire, Requiem tells the story of the working-class Baxter family whose lives are immeasurably altered by the deaths of their parents during WW1. Told through the eyes of the two Baxter brothers, Tom and Billy, and the local landowner's heir, Edward Mountfield, the drama centres around the precociously talented middle child Rose. Rose is a vivacious, opinionated and intelligent girl who has dreams and aspirations beyond her humble origins; this coupled with her uncommon skill in playing the piano leads her to cross pathways with Lady Mountfield, mother of Edward and wife to Sir Peter, a bluff boar of a man whose world view is entrenched in the social mores of the time. The lives of the two families become increasingly intertwined as circumstance and experience draw them closer together. As characters battle with their own demons, many haunted by their experiences of the Great War, a force for harm draws closer to the participants setting in progress a course of events that will shatter the seeming quiet of this rural community.
