Report of the Joint Committee on Reconstruction, at the first session, Thirty-ninth Congress

By 1866 U.S. Government Printing Office

America tried to rebuild itself on paper, in public, under oath. Politics turns into hard evidence. Report of the Joint Committee on Reconstruction, at the first session, Thirty-ninth Congress is a landmark congressional committee report from postwar America 1866, capturing how lawmakers assessed the shattered Union and the conditions of the southern United States. Compiled as a complete congressional report, it brings together the committee's findings and reasoning on southern state readmission and the practical demands of civil rights enforcement, revealing how national power, citizenship, and security were argued in the wake of war. The result is a gripping historical document collection: direct, procedural, and often unsettling in its plain official language. Read it as a courtroom-like record, or as a blueprint for a nation negotiating democracy's boundaries publicly. For readers of civil war reconstruction history, this volume shows the machinery behind congressional reconstruction legislation and the pressures that drove radical republican debates across the Capitol. It is equally useful as an academic history reference and a foundation for political science research, offering a primary-source window into how policy is built from testimony, statistics, and contested definitions of loyalty and freedom. Collectors of classic Americana will value its authority and scarcity, while curious general readers will find a clear route into one of the most consequential moments in United States governance. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint -- a collector's item and a cultural treasure.
