Ilona cole has written an account of her courtship and marriage that is uplifting and inspiring. It takes her from the end of World War II in Germany to the present in Washington State. Throughout the story you are impressed with the values of family loyalty and devotion, courage to face the unknown, and optimism and joy in the little things of life. Ilona has filled her pages with details of travel, art, and special meals. The reader will have an appreciation for the similarities and differences in culture while reading about the universal themes of love and friendship.

Out of the ashes - a 50 year love story

Darmstadt, Germany had its September 11th, but it came in 1944. From the rubble of that beautiful seat of the Grand Duke of Hesse came a young lady who had just completed her studies in international commerce and law and who dared to apply for a position with the headquarters of the Northern Area Command in Frankfurt in 1948. This memoir by Bellevue, WA resident Ilona Cole tells how her life was rebuilt, of the meeting and marriage to an American G.I. and the next 50 years of their life together in the Pacific Northwest. Their travels, love of art and good food are contrasted to her W.W.II flashbacks and the pain of separating from her family who remained in Germany. An interesting read.

Fifty years of a wonderful partnership

This book is a wonderful description of marriage between two people from two different worlds. It is a great story about a chance meeting that grew into fifty years of understanding and harmony. The author has the capability to describe every detail with a touch of humor, some sadness and draws the reader into the story with ease. Highlights include travel, food, wine and a dedication to art.

Sentimental journey through 50 years of marriage.

A charming chronicle of a beautiful pairing of two lives enduring the ravages of war, hardships of separation from the homeland to a foreign country, and new beginnings - the perfect love story! Nice flow throughout the book.

This inspirational book makes me want to be a better wife

After reading Rendezvous Frankfurt, I purchased copies for all the readers on my Christmas gift list, because I loved this book. Ilona Cole's main theme is meeting her husband-to-be in post-war Germany, and their first fifty years together, but she also includes some flashbacks during the war from a young woman's frightened perspective. She shows her dedication to family, her determination and ability to make the best of some very difficult circumstances, and she tells uplifting stories with a sense of humor and delightful attention to detail. I think it is an ideal book for book clubs, and I recommend it highly to anyone who loves true stories, art, wine and travel, subjects that are interwoven throughout the book. It was an inspiration to me, and my husband is reading it now.
