Set in Ireland, Relevant Anywhere

I just finished this book two days ago, and, though I was a bit irritated with the ending, it was worth the ride. It took reading the first two pages for me to be very intrigued and buy it. Amelia is like many women - smart, forward-motion hard-working and after the big bucks, until 37 hits and she is sick of being alone. Her circle of friends is a major reason for the aloneness - it's eluded to several times, but she never really grasps that - some sweaters can be knitted so tight that water (men) can't be poured through - that's Amelia & her friends. Anyway, she takes a Harvard marketing-based course to get married in a year, keeps doodling herself in a Vera Wang with a faceless groom, and the ride through her past loves is really fantastic - it seems you really couldn't make this stuff up, yet each character is developed and 'real' to the reader, you can't wait to see what went wrong in each of the past relationships. I loved the format and would recommend it as great summer reading or to lighten-up a winter's eve.

Good Book

I enjoyed this book a lot, very entertaining... I read it on my plane ride home from Vegas, it made the trip seem very short, since I was so wrapped up in the book.

Revisiting past relationships.

Amelia Lockwood has a television career, her own flat in a nice area, and dedicated friends. The only thing she feels is missing is marriage. Amelia just wants to get married but at the age of 37 she is still not married. When seeing a course being offered to single women over 35 who are guaranteed a marriage proposal before the end of the year, she signs up. The problem with this course is that she has to visit 10 of her past boyfriends to see where she went wrong in her relationships. Amelia sets about meeting all her past boyfriends over the years. Amelia is also told to look at every man as a potential husband. But will she find that someone special? Will her past help her with finding her Mr. Right for the future? Will she become engaged by the end of the year? This book is entertaining to read when we see how she met her boyfriends and how they have turned out. She becomes the class joke when she reports what her old boyfriends have turned out like. This book doesn't end the way you expect it to but it is a satisfying read.

As our main character decides she is absolutely ready to get married, she copes with a number of situations that may or may not help her achieve her goal. With a strong circle of friends and a challenge to revisit all of her prior relationships, Amelia faces adversity with a strong sense of humor. She needs it too - as the reader learns of Amelia's past boyfriends and their fates, the reader will laugh out-loud at her exploits and current situations. This book is about a strong woman who has been derailed in her attempt to find a worthy mate. She learns about her past mistakes and how her current relationships may also influence her romantic aspirations. As a career woman, Amelia finds great success where she did not expect it. She approaches her career with a strong confidence that she is unable to then use to her advantage in her romantic life. For any reader who was a teenager in the 1980's, there is an extra element of fun, as Amelia not only discusses her former boyfriends but all about the culture of that decade. It is a wonderful blast to the past. The book is an easy read yet does allow for some self-reflection regarding major decisions in our own lives.

Funny, Sarcastic, Honest and Enjoyable

Amelia Lockhart, successful, single, and living in Dublin, shares almost 12 months of her life in Remind Me Again Why I Need a Man. What makes these 12-months special is that Amelia is determined that she will be married at the end of them. After a number of failed relationships and trying a number of ways to meet men, including blind dates, set-ups, and Internet dating, Amelia enrolls in an evening class that promises a 12-step program that will help women over thirty-five get married in less than one year. As part of the 12-step program, Amelia has to contact ten ex-boyfriends, and ask for feedback about why their relationship ended, which is when the fun begins! Amelia's encounters with a variety of boyfriends (her first boyfriend, her college boyfriend, her most recent ex, who is fondly referred to as "he-whose-name-shall-forever-remain-unspoken") are full of surprising and hysterical situations. While Amelia searches her heart and for a spouse, the rest of her life continues. She socializes with four long-term friends, each of whom has a strong opinion and a portfolio of jokes about Amelia's quest and each of the ex-boyfriends. At work, Amelia has new job, the challenge of saving a failing show, and scary interactions with her boss's boss. In her class, she meets other interesting, talented, and marriage focused women, although no-one that has as scarily funny ex-boyfriend stories as Amelia. Remind Me Again Why I Need a Man is honest, funny, sarcastic, well-written and enjoyable to read.
