Religious thought of modern India a study with special reference to swami vivekananda

In the history of Indian philosophical and religious tradition the 19* century has a great significance. The impact of West is important because the Indian religious thought was greatly influenced by the Western tradition. In Indian tradition and ethos, religion plays an important role. The period ending about four and half centuries before 1945 was a period of Western dominance. As Toynbee remarks, "during these 450 years the West was an aggressor on the whole and the world was hit hard by the West"1 . The intrusion of the West began when Vasco Da Gama found the sea route to India in 1498. The process of decolonization set with the withdrawal of British forces from India in 1947 and the European Navy from China in 1949. This period (1498 to 1945) constitutes "a clearly marked epoch of history" presenting a singular unity in its fundamental aspects. The European powers mainly the English, the French, the Portuguese and the Dutch wanted to conquer India but finally the English were successful in this attempt.
