HALLALULAH! A STORY WITH GREAT DEPTH AND SUBSTANCE

How can a mouse be so darn cute and steal the scenes? Rafe Tyler has just gotten out of the Ohio prison where he was met by Ben Edwards. He can hardly believe he was free and riding a horse again. How long does it take to ride from Ohio to Colorado? Really just 3 weeks? And that little mouse, Abner travel the whole distance in Rafe's pocket. When we move to Boston we find Sara Randall on her death bed. She begs her daughter, Shea to bring a wooden box to her intending to destroy it and its contents. Shea didn't make it. What was the mystery of her mother's wooden box? Shea becomes upset when she realizes that her mother, a stickler for honesty and truth, has lived a lie saying that her husband was dead. Shea wants to find her father so she heads west to Casey Springs trying to find someone to take her to Rushton and the Circle R ranch. As luck would have it Ben follows her and entices her to let him guide her - only they end up in the mountains. Are we expecting bad things or not? She has a clipping of the court martial naming Major Jack Randall as the one who charged Rafferty Tyler as a thief and traitor. When she is brought to the mountain hide-away of Rafe, she is hostile to be held captive. Rafe is angry with Ben for bringing her there. Now we begin to see the slow growth of these two haunted people as they try to live by their convictions. She hopes that Jack Randall is her father and not really guilty of any misdoings. She still does not understand why her mother left him. Tyler is determined to make Randall pay for imprisoning him for something he didn't do. He also now needs to handle the man's daughter impersonally. He is not going to become emotionally involved with her. [So he thinks] A change of directions in emotions happen when the little bear cub is caught in a trap. The bear cub and Abner get along together. Rafe suddenly needs help now he can no longer lock Shea in the cabin. When Randall stumbles onto the rumor that he has a daughter, he needs to find her. Also his old acqaintance, McClary shows up trying to blackmail Jack. It just keeps getting better as the tale unfolds and you begin to know that this book is a keeper. The resolution is darn good but I sure wished that old mama bear had done the deed, maybe I am a bit blood-thirsty. Sure hope that Shea continued her drawings. Oh, did I forget about Ben's brother, Clint Edwards? He worked for Jack Randall but kept Rafe informed of the goings on with the payrolls. He had a bit of a romance going on with the sheriff's daughter. I did like Russ Dewayne and was sure glad when the Govenor showed up to help straighten things out. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as a rare 5 stars plus -m

Another Potter great.

The story is outlined in detail by the literary times review. It is not the run of the mill western because it deals with horrific, freqeunt betrayal and the relentless search by Rafe to clear his name. Watching him evolve from this driven man whose only emotion is hate and revenge into a man who learns that revenge isn't all he thought it would be is excellent. The fact that he is helped in this soul changing experience by the love of his enemy's daughter is also excellent. Shea also must choose between the man she loves and the father she never knew she had. Add to that great characters and incredibly dedicated male friendships that stand by Rafe throughout his ordeal and sacrifice their lives to help him and you have a really wonderful book. It's so much more than a romance. The male bonding in itself is very unique and heartrending. Pat Potter's books are rarely disappointing and this one wasn't either.
