Charlton, Hall, Milburn, Robson, may sound like a North East football team but they are the great Reiving clan names who fought and stole their way through the Tudor Age. Loyal only to family and clan they defied the efforts of southern governments to tame them. Some joined the Percies, the Nevilles and the Dacres in two great rebellions against the Tudors which saw the end of two great houses and twice in 50 years, saw the full force of Tudor brutality fall on themselves, "the lesser sort" of people. Many were recusants, refusing King Henry's new religion, and relying on their remoteness from the seat of Government to keep them safe.As Northumbrians entered the "Early Modern" Age, as historians term it, there was still one mighty medieval battle to fight, at Flodden, where a Scottish army was slaughtered. Border war continued unceasing until the border itself disappeared on Elizabeth's death in 1603.The Tudor reformation brought religion to the centre of politics, destroyed the monasteries, the art of centuries in churches and replaced them with the Royal Arms. But among the Northumbrians were those who would benefit from the sale of church lands, from the Bishop's loss of power. They were new men who were making their way and their money, and the new source of wealth was lying just beneath their feet in the coal seams. The key to North East dominance of the coal trade was easy access to the rivers and thence by sea, cheaply, to the chief and growing market of London. These years saw the establishment of the base of local wealth for the next 400 years. This is volume three in the series "Northumbrians", following the fate of local people through history. The story is told as far as possible in their own words or those of their contemporaries by the author, an historian, born and bred on the banks of the river Tyne.
