After a thirty-five-year teaching career at Rock County High School in Bassett, Nebraska, I retired and moved to Lincoln. In late 2000, Mariel Fegley, owner and editor of the Rock County Leader newspaper in Bassett, asked me to consider writing a column for the paper. She told me that she thought friends and former students back in Bassett would be interested in knowing about my life in Lincoln, especially since I was serving as a fraternity housemother on UNL's East Campus. Because I loved to write and had worked closely with the Leader staff for some time while teaching the RCHS journalism class, I was interested. Additionally, I thought it might provide an opportunity to show how positive fraternity life could be.
