Reflections from a Riper Hour

"We come and we go." In between that span and space lies the multi-hued story of our lives, the story of human desires, fears, struggles, errors, understanding and love. Set against overarching terrestrial and celestial events, our journey unfolds, our history is written. Throughout the generations, the question before us has always been: How, then, shall we live? From all that experience and knowledge have taught us, the answer today is quite clear: we must learn to live in awareness and empathy, with deep respect for all of creation, for not a single atom, much less a single life, exists in isolation. The once prominent idea of independence, separateness, self-sufficiency, has been unmasked as an illusion, and a costly one at that. This is a universe of radical interconnection, of profound relatedness. In fact, we live in a world in which relationships alone are real. Great, indeed, is the responsibility that arises from a cosmic web where all the dots are connected. "You cannot cut a blade of grass without disturbing the universe," reveals and admonishes the wisdom of the East. To awaken to the deeper truths of life, to honor realities beyond the apparent, and transform our way of being and doing, is the aim and purpose of our existence. Thus we learn, we mature, and ultimately gain spiritual enlightenment and liberation. Needless to say, all of this is quite demanding; in fact, being human is the hardest curriculum we ever enroll in. This is, in large measure, due to the fact that freedom, which makes our destiny different from all other life forms on this planet, is not only a magnificent gift, but a weighty challenge.Thus, set against the natural seasons and cycles of the larger environs in which we live, our personal ups and downs, expansions and contractions, joys and pains, unfold. And while there are continual setbacks and ever-present dangers to the human enterprise, few would doubt that we stand today at the threshold of a new chapter in the ongoing saga of humanity's presence on Earth. For there has been a dramatic shift in consciousness ushered in not only by timeless spiritual insights, but the amazing discoveries and developments in modern science. Still, it has become obvious that to travel the journey toward wholeness and true freedom, we metaphorically need new shoes for our soles, and a new vision for our souls. May these verses nurture and guide us across the terrain we must traverse in order to claim a new frontier and birth a riper, wiser self.
