He was a French writer and moralist who died at the age of 31 after anonymously publishing a collection of essays and aphorisms with the assistance of his friend Voltaire. After his death in 1747, this work received public acclaim under his own name and became popular in France. This collection, Reflections and Maxims, comprises the most complete compendium of Vauvenargues' work to date, including letters to Voltaire, numerous essays, and nearly a thousand aphorisms and maxims. This work is also published in both the original French and in an English translation with footnotes.
