Reflecting the Adversary: Social Identity, Frontier Stabilisation and the Making of Medieval Selves

What happens when an enemy cannot be defeated, but cannot be ignored too? Across the medieval world, prolonged frontier conflicts did more than determine the fate of kingdoms. They transformed the societies that experienced them-reshaping political institutions, military practices, social boundaries, religious ideas, economic systems, and collective identities. Reflecting the Adversary develops a new comparative framework for understanding this process: Ādarśa of the Enemy under conditions of Bounded Threat Equilibrium. Drawing on the Sanskrit concept of Ādarśa, meaning both "mirror" and "ideal," Amit Anand argues that a persistent adversary can become a mirror through which a threatened society defines what it is-and what it must not become. The result is neither simple imitation nor straightforward resistance, but a process of selective appropriation, rejection and inversion. The book develops this argument through the Rajput frontier of medieval India and tests it comparatively against Christian Spain, Byzantium and the Marathas. Bengal provides a crucial negative case, demonstrating that prolonged contact with Islamic power did not automatically produce oppositional identity. Geography, the persistence and perceived intensity of the threat, the possibility of refuge, and the presence of elite actors capable of transforming survival into ideological purpose all shape the outcome. Grounded in epigraphic and literary evidence and informed by frontier theory, Social Identity Theory and comparative historical sociology, Reflecting the Adversary asks a larger question: why do some societies respond to prolonged external pressure by constructing powerful oppositional identities, while others accommodate, assimilate or transform differently? The book's answer is not a law of history but a testable causal mechanism. Its ambition is to offer a portable framework for understanding how collective selves are forged when civilisations live for generations in the shadow of an adversary.
