thoughts of the church fathers.

Excellent, concise and easy to read recap of the deep thoughts of the church fathers. I would like to argue with some of them. (Like Martin Luther who said women's hips indicate women are qualified only for having babies. No, Robert Elmer's book doesn't go into that!) He quotes Calvin who said healing is a temporary gift, and I would love to courteously point out to the great man that Jesus told the apostles to teach everyone to do all things He taught them to do, until the end of the age/world/cosmos, depending on your translation. True, we don't see as many healings as the early church, but neither did the people of Nazareth--because of their lack of faith. I wonder what Calvin would say about that. It's fascinating to discover where our churches got some of our beliefs and traditions, even to question them and perhaps go back past our traditions and to the Word of God itself. In this era of what may be the seventh and lukewarm Laodicean, even Post-Christian church age, Robert Elmer's book is a timely reminder of commitment, dedication and walked-out faith in God.

A breath of fresh air

As a Christian who occassionally feels the church has become a watered down version of what it should be, this book is like a breath of fresh air. Drawing on the writings of Calvin, Luther, Murray, Wesley, Spurgeon, Booth and Moody, all those great writers of the past, Rober Elmer has reminded the reader once again of Christianity, the way it should be. You'll find sections on Reconciliation, Communion, Baptism, Confirmation, Marriage, Vocation, and Prayer for the Sick. Each section reaffirmed my beliefs and gave me something to dwell on. This book has a permanent place on my bookshelf. It's one I'll read more than once.

Powerful Reminders About the Keys to Our Spiritual Life

With the noise and challenges of our daily life, how do you return to the essentials? It's a question asked--and answered in this slim yet powerful volume from Robert Elmer. For hundreds of years, the church defined faith in seven essential sacraments: baptism, confirmation, communion, reconciliation, prayer for the sick, marriage and vocation (a celebration of our work). Elmer has read the classic teachings and pulled together a series of engaging and readable insight from classic teachers like Martin Luther, John Calvin, Charles Spurgeon, Andrew Murray and D.L. Moody. The results of this careful volume will help you deepen your faith walk. Each sacrament ends with a section called "Putting the Words to Work" where the individual reader or a group can apply the readings to their own lives. In the final section, Elmer asks, "What do we do now with so much good advice?...It's a voyage of rediscovery, back through God's grace. Don't forget, though, that God's best gifts will permeate our lives only with our permission, with our active consent." Read deeply in these pages. It's worth the effort.
