What makes a good diver? This is a question we hear very often from both our students and diving professionals. The answers of course vary and refer to how everyone understands the term "good". Finally, the answers attribute to the "good" scuba diver are a set of characteristics and skills, some of which are the theoretical background, aquaticity and ability in the water, discipline, experience etc. In addition, ecological and safety consciousness, camaraderie, while in some systems we will see other characteristics such as ownership of equipment, etc. But what is the element that really characterizes a scuba diver? What is the dominant element without which a scuba diver cannot exist and function? Is it the theory? Well, there are also practical scuba divers. People who have not completed any diving course but are diving recreationally or professionally Is it the experience? This is something that is acquired over time and attrition anyway. Is it discipline? Ecological consciousness? Camaraderie? Safety? Similarly: I know quite competent divers who do not exhibit any of the positive characteristics above. What makes a good scuba diver after all? My answer is the following: All of the above and much more but with the main and dominant characteristic being aquaticity ability and skills in the water. That's where the diver's field of action is and that's where he has to work. So, from the subjective "Good" we pass to the objective "capable". In the following essay I will develop my personal views on the subject of water exercises and skills as I understand them from experience as both a diver and an instructor. Of course the exercises for a scuba diver are too many - especially if we start to develop specialty exercises - so we will limit ourselves for now to the ISO24801-2, OWD/P1 first course exercises.
