Maliq feels that he has been dealt a bad hand in life. Fayetteville State is shutting down for the Christmas break as sophomore Maliq just finds out that he has no where to go. His mom breaks the news that the apartment has been padlocked and she is on the road with her truck driver boyfriend to escape her problems. Maliq is left to figure out where he's going to live for the next month. Brandon, Maliq best friend offers him a room at his grandmother's house but he warns him, at Annie Mae's house, church isn't optional. He's not much of a Christian but when he meets Sapphire, the Pastor's daughter, his entire world begins to change.
