Rory Winston, a San Francisco woman of Caribbean heritage, meets a down-on-his-luck traveler from Philadelphia, Todd Branson, in late 1990s San Francisco. Through the force of her personality, she tries to show him the power of redemptive love, but Todd's self-destructive habits and personality make that an almost impossible task, as Rory recounts to Todd's sister, Marianne. The book features a number of characters one just might meet in the City by the Bay, and the City itself is a prominent character as Todd takes his last shot at redemption there. An underlying current of the story is the interracial romance that crops up between the two main characters.
