2 years ago I was promoted to a tech. management position requiring me to administer several linux machines. Yes, I was a brand new to the world of linux and searched long and hard through book after book. I can now tell you that as I move forward to my next position, the author and this series has become the most loyal and indispensable friend a linux newbie can have. The book consistently goes the extra mile on important topics. There were many a day that I "needed" and the book ALWAYS came through. So, two years later I am taking the time to say thank you and recommend it to the world. A MUST have for those taking the plunge ... one in which you'll never regret.
A great book for people starting out in Linux

This books pretty much covers it all. From networking, mysql and dns to gaming, video/audio, office tools, programming, etc. etc. Easy to read, well written, as I am from the Faroe Islands, and have no trouble what so ever reading it. I like the "learn by example" method used throughout the book, which will have you exploring Linux Fedora on your own, in the minimal amount of time. Also, the entire Linux Fedora 4 OS is bundled with this book, as 2xCD and 1 DVD. This, combined with the book, is all you need to get started in the world of Linux. 5 stars from me! Excellent book if you are interested in learning & using Red Hat Linux

I highly recommend this book, to anyone who wants to learn and use Red Hat Linux! I have other books about Linux, but the books by Christopher Negus are the ones I read, first, when I need to learn how to do something new or something that I rarely do. The other books, I usually do not open. My first book in this series, was the Red Hat Linux 7.3 Bible. These are very large books, but they have an excellent Table of Contents and Index and those make it very easy to find what you are looking for. Earlier this year, I noticed these books are now coming with DVD media, so when I ordered the Red Hat Fedora Linux 3 Bible, I also ordered a DVD drive for my PC. On the back cover of this book, it shows "Reader Level: Beginning to Advanced". This, truly, is a book I can recommend to those who are new to Linux; unlike the other Linux books I have, which are best read by computer professionals or advanced users; without being books written for dummies. These books, for me, are like having a Linux guru with me, helping me, when I am trying to learn something new. I'm an early retired computer professional. I'd never worked with Unix, so these books make the "Learning Curve" much easier for me. Disclaimer: I have purchased a number of different editions of this book. I have also received 2 free copies, because I wrote a review that was published in one edition and because I sent some suggestions and corrections to the author.

Very Good Way to Learn Linux
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 20 years ago
For years, I've suffered from the occasional bout of "try to figure out Linux" mania. So, I've repeatedly downloaded and installed various flavors of the OS and tried to work with them for a while. I invariably ended up throwing my hands up in despair because I couldn't find a Rosetta stone to decipher the Linux community's secret language and arcana. Since the previous editions of this book seem to have good reviews and because this version comes with a DVD with the latest full Fedora Core 4 version of Linux (normally taking 4 CDs), I thought I'd give this book a try. I'm very satisfied with it. This book is everything you need to get started with Linux. It has the DVD (plus a 2 CD smaller equivalent) with the OS and a huge selection of applications/utilities, honest-to-goodness simple English explanations of how to get started with Linux, and similar explanations of how to do more advanced activities (networking and various server-type things). The key is that the author translates that previously mentioned arcana in reasonable steps that let the reader absorb the stuff without getting lost. For those who are already past the initial "what's this Linux stuff anyway" stage, the book also seems to have all the information necessary to get various servers (Print Server, File Server, Mail Server, FTP Server, Web Server, LDAP Address Book Server, DHCP and NIS Server, MySQL Database Server, DNS Server, and Appletalk Server) up and running (that's beyond my needs and abilities, so I qualify that with "seems."). If there's material that's missing from the book, it's not immediately apparent to me. If you have any desire to try out Linux for the first time, or even if you're already experienced in Linux and want to learn advanced topics, I highly recommend this book. I rate it at 4 stars out of 5.
