There are few Americans and Europeans in the coastal towns and missions of Old California. Among them are a hide and tallow exporter named Tipton and his beautiful redheaded daughter, Alena. At her father's death, 19-year-old Alena carries on his business. But tragedy strikes while she is visiting San Juan, and she must return quickly to Monterey. Her travelling companion is a hide rancher who's as rugged and remote as the terrain, and haunted by a memory that keeps him single in this land of lovers. Neither knows that the next few days will start them both on a brand new journey ...
Loved the Spanish flavor of that brief period in the old Californio days before the Gold Rush which is so charmingly presented here. Alena is delightful as the gringo redhead who haunts the hide rancher who tries so hard to stay single in this land of lovers. A great heroine for a fascinating era!
