Red Deer is fantasy infused historical fiction. Young Jesse Walker from present day is transported through time to Nanih Waiya, the legendary birthplace of the Choctaw people. The American Revolution is in the past, the War of 1812 is looming, and the Choctaw nation is caught in the middle. With his prized walking stick, Jesse passes through a time portal from the woods in his own backyard to the sacred mound of Nanih Waiya. He is discovered and captured in the sacred cave by Choctaw scouts from the Okla Hannali district of the Choctaw nation. Jesse is adopted by the tribe and through a series of lessons, tests and events, learns the way of the Choctaw. He is mentored by Talako, the son of the great Choctaw Chief, Pushmataha, and is befriended by a gregarious French trader, who witnesses Jesse wielding power from his walking stick which the Choctaw believe could be the sacred staff of legend. Jesse courts Palali, the beautiful daughter of the Chief of Nanih Waiya. Jesse has an adversary in pursuit of the affections of Palali, an ambitious and vile warrior named Misa (Scar in Choctaw). The adventure continues as Scar conceives a despicable plan to stop Jesse and gain control of the sacred staff.
