After reading this book and attending 12 step groups I have become more balanced physically, mentally and spiritually. The gifts I have received are more common sense, tolerance, patience and a clear memory of all experiences. I have also found writing my affirmations as stated in the book has helped in my healing process. Sally Patterson , Oshkosh , WI 54902

Meyerholz is truly gifted and well versed in understanding the dynamics co-dependency. Like "Codependency Sucks," "Recovery from Childhood in America" is dedicated in comprehending the spiritual disconnection in American society which I found to be extremely invaluable. This is an absolutely fantastic book that gives profound insight to spirituality as well as healing. Her books have taught me how to re-parenting the self with intense exercises and tools from 12-step programs. This book is highly recommended and is spiritually explosive!

In this follow-up to her first title, "Co-Dependency Sucks", author and therapist Linda Meyerholz clearly explains and illuminates her coherent and relevant view of modern western culture. She specifically focuses on how growing up in our culture influences our individual lives and our relationships. It is the book for you if you have ever wondered things like: "Why do we argue so much?"; "Why is the divorce rate so high?"; "What compels people to addiction?"; "I have all I ever wanted, so why am I so unhappy?" I have personally applied the insights and lessons in this book to my own life and relationships. I have a much more clear sense of who I am, and how I got this way. This book is recommended reading for every person in America! Get it. You will be glad you did.
Who knew "normal"American childhood was so dangerous. . . ?
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 20 years ago
If you grew up in a typical American family, with a relatively happy childhood, you may think the title to this book is an exaggeration. NOT SO!! The book talks about you. Even the most loving families function dysfuctionally given the climate of pressure and stress that constitutes the modern world; and the institutions of public school and organized religion only add to America's collective anger and low self-esteem. Linda Meyerholz looks honestly at a topic most of us look past, and she sees in the experience of typical American childhood the dusfunctional behavior that produces so many people with addictive behaviors, such as: alcoholism, drug use, partner abuse, the need for constant stimulation from the environment, obesity, resistance to adequate reading and mathematics skills, and a national epidemic of sexually inappropriate behavior. This book will help you see inside the "secrets" of your own family as well as society as a whole. I have personally worked with Linda as a client in her clinical practice and know she has lived every word in this book, repeatedly, honestly, and profoundly.
