a compelling account of actual events

In reading this book one takes a step back to a time in our history. Mr. Smith gives the reader a chance to experience what prison life was like. I found the vocabulary of the time interesting (the footnotes helped in defining some of the terms used). While the experience must have been horrific, Mr. Smith describes it with dignity.
