Reclaiming Reality: Vincent Bugliosi and the Dallas Conspiracy

Reclaiming Reality is a response to and refutation of Vincent Bugliosi's 2007 book Reclaiming History: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Bugliosi's biggest problem is that he starts with the conclusion that the Warren Report is correct, and that Oswald was the lone nut assassin. Bugliosi's book is essentially a repetition of the conclusions of the official reports, combined with some specious reasoning and outright false (or simply confused) statements. Here are some examples: Like the Warren Commission, Bugliosi ignores all testimony and facts that indicate that the fatal shot came from the right front. Bugliosi tells us that the police "can place Oswald on the sixth floor of the Depository a few minutes before the shooting," though no policeman offered any testimony definitively placing Oswald on that floor at that time. Bugliosi tells us that President Kennedy's head moved fonvard at the moment of impact, though the Zapruder film shows the opposite. Mr. Bugliosi says that the four main Parkland doctors who attended to the dying president "all agree" that the bullets were fired from above and behind by a high-velocity bullet, though nothing in the Commission testimony of those doctors mentions a high-velocity rifle bullet fired from above and behind . Bugliosi repeats the Warren Report conclusion that only three shots were fired, and insists at various points in his book that the famous Magic Bullet theory is real. Bugliosi refers to Oswald's "flight" from the Book Depository as an indication of his guilt, when in fact Oswald was calmly drinking a soda at the time of the assassination, and after he finished it, left the building along with many other people. Mr. Bugliosi believed that Jack Ruby's murder of Oswald was a spontaneous act, and that Ruby was not part of any conspiracy, though Ruby stated categorically that there was a conspiracy and he was part of it. Bugliosi states in some places that the fatal wound was where the Zapruder film shows it to be (in front of the right ear), but in others states that the wound was where Dr. Humes and the autopsy report say that it was, and at yet another place Bugliosi states that the fatal wound extended into the occipital region. Bugliosi tells us that what was observed by the Parkland doctors and nurses, and several other eyewitnesses, was simply wrong and should be ignored. He scoffs at the idea that frames are missing from the Zapruder film, and insists that the original film was never out of the physical possession of Mr. Zapruder and Life magazine "during the period when the alteration supposedly took place." In fact, the film has been extensively altered. These are only a few examples of Mr. Bugliosi's distortions of the truth; there are many more. Book jacket.
