Reclaiming Our Humanity

In Reclaiming Our Humanity, we explore the remarkable journeys of six African American men who defied the odds by rebuilding their lives after incarceration. Their stories are testaments to the power of determination, redemption, and the human spirit. Harold Atkins: Imprisoned in the State Penitentiary for over six years, Harold discovered his passion for working with marginalized communities while behind bars. After his release, Harold created Healthy Pathways, became the Director of Success Centers for juvenile offenders, and became the president and head coach of the Menlo Atherton Vikings football team. Dr. Reggie Daniels: Dr. Daniels turned his life around through education. He obtained his associate degree shortly after being released and continued his studies, eventually earning a doctorate from the University of San Francisco. Today, he works as a college professor, motivating students to overcome adversity. Marlon Lewis: Incarcerated for drug-related offenses, Marlon transformed his life by getting a janitorial certificate and several units towards his associate degree while in Lompoc Federal Penitentiary. Today, Marlon holds a Master's in Business and is the Chief Superintendent of Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) maintenance. The janitorial certificate he received in a federal prison was the catalyst that started his career. Gary "Malachi" Scott: Malachi, a talented community organizer, learned about Restorative Justice Circles while incarcerated. Malachi now advocates for criminal justice reform and is the Re-entry and Community Restorative Justice Coordinator for Restorative Justice for Oakland Youth (RJOY). Vincent "Vince" Garrett: Vince channeled his energy into getting his Master's Degree from the University of California, Berkeley. Vince is now the Student Services Specialist for Restoring Our Communities (ROC) at Laney College in Oakland, CA. Shaka Senghor: While spending 19 years in different prisons, Shaka wrote his first book entitled Writing My Wrongs. Shaka discovered his gift for writing while serving time. After his release, he became Head of Diversity, Equality & Inclusion at TripActions. In addition, Shaka is a Director's Fellow Alumni of the MIT Media Lab, a college lecturer, and a best-selling author. Reclaiming Our Humanity is an inspiring collection of stories that reveals the incredible potential for change and growth within individuals who have experienced the criminal justice system. These six African American men prove that success can emerge from even the darkest circumstances with determination, support, and an unwavering belief in themselves. Their tales serve as a beacon of hope for all those who strive to overcome adversity and build a brighter future.
