Born in 1788, Richard Gentry became one of the great adventurers of his generation. He was one of the Kentucky Volunteers who invaded Canada during the War of 1812. He was a pioneer in Missouri's unruly Boonslick region and one of the earliest travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. He was killed in 1837 while leading a charge against Seminole warriors in the Everglades. He was by turns a land speculator, an accused murderer, a state senator, a horse-race gambler, a General, and a military hero.He was the first mayor of Columbia, Missouri, and arguably its true founder. He wasn't, however, an easy man to live with.
