Recent Advances in Piezosurgery

Piezosurgery is a modern surgical technique that uses piezoelectric ultrasonic vibrations to precisely and selectively cut mineralized bone tissue while protecting surrounding soft tissues. Introduced by Tomaso Vercellotti in collaboration with Mectron Medical Technology. This manuscript highlights several advantages of piezosurgery-Enhanced Precision, Reduced Trauma, Improved Healing, Slower Procedure, Cost. Piezosurgery has wide applications in periodontics and dental implantology, where bone preservation is critical. Specific uses include bone regeneration, crown lengthening, and sinus lift procedures, where it has significantly reduced membrane perforation rates compared to rotary instruments. It is also used for atraumatic tooth extractions and bone harvesting. The manuscript concludes that while challenges like time, cost, and the learning curve remain, ongoing research and technological advancements are expected to make piezosurgery a more integral part of periodontal practice, promoting better patient outcomes.
