At the age of 59 Moshe Goshen-Gottstein, a world-renowned Israeli scholar of philology and linguistics, went into a coma following coronary by-pass surgery and remained unconscious for almost four months. Most of his doctors predicted that his vegetative state would be permanent, yet he did regain consciousness in the 15th week and eventually made an almost complete recovery. In the five years since then he has published three books, lectured at Heidelberg, Frankfurt, Harvard, Brandets, Hebrew, and Bar Ilan universities, and received the prestigious Israel Prize for Jewish Studies. He continues to lead a remarkably productive life.
