Rebooting Civilization is not about prepping per se--it's about rebuilding civilization and living the highest standard of living possible after some catastrophe. It goes beyond that, though, and doesn't just apply to life after some collapse. Many, if not all, of its' precepts would apply prior to any downturn, giving people a state of independence that can be used whenever and whatever happens. It seeks to answer the question, "How well could I live without electricity or fossil fuels?" and it's the story of the authors' quest to answer that question. The author looked at food growing, cooking and storage, at lighting and heating your house, and generally trying to bring back what many would fear to lose. He studied a lot of history to see how things were done prior to the widespread distribution of those two commodities, and how todays' knowledge and technology could improve on those older lifestyles and habits. He looked at the design and building of solar homes requiring a lot less energy to keep the place warm in the winter and cooler in the summer, or the building of solar ovens/heaters to cook with, to dry meat, fruits and vegetables, sterilize and distill water and a host of other uses. Throughout the process of research and writing he had the goal of finding the highest level of efficiency achievable for all things. It is not about hiding in the woods or city, but in forming a community of like-minded and knowledgeable individuals to maintain that higher standard of living that an individual or family cannot do on their own.
