In Book 16, the 18th Century will see even greater accomplishments in art, science, literature, and war, than any centuries before it. The Great Northern War between Czarist Russia and the Swedish Empire will begin the century and on for twenty more years. King Frederick I will declare the Kingdom of Prussia denying his suzerainty to Poland. Peter the Great creates the city of Saint Petersburg as the new capital of Russia in its Baltic lands taken from the Swedes. This war between Sweden and Russia sees Charles XII of Sweden fleeing to the Ottoman Empire. Louis XIV dies in 1715. His prediction that "After me, comes the flood" meaning that the 'Sun King's life of self-indulgences will leave France in great peril. Lisbon is destroyed by an earthquake. The city of Marseilles will suffer the Great Plague. The western European portion of the family experiences great but heroic losses. The Seven Years' War (1756 to 1763) is fought among European powers in various theaters around the world. The French and Indian War is the North American chapter of the Seven Years' War. It is fought in colonial North America and on the high seas in the West Indies. The French and their Seneca and Iroquois Indian allies wage a savage war against the English and their colonists. Catherine the Great of Russia begins her reign in 1762, sinking her claws into Poland's King Stanislaw II Augustus, through her bed-chamber. The First Partition of Poland is made with her and Count von Bolman's insistence. At this same time, twelve years after the end of the French and Indian War, the American Revolutionary War begins in 1775 with the 'shot that was heard around the world'. This war will see many Polish expatriates volunteering their services to help create this new nation. Kazimierz Pulaski and Tadeusz Kosciusko become heroes of the new United States of America. The American Revolution will see several Andruszkiewiczes actively fighting for American freedom.
