Guy Thomas, the owner of Bobbie and a history teacher at the junior high school, also joins the search for his beloved pet.Students of Fremont suspect students from the Burley Junior High and decide to retaliate. Mayhem results when students begin the back and forth retaliation against each other's schools. The two junior highs from Renton also become entangled in the feud. Rebecca goes on the air with talk-show host, Warren Jackson, to plead for the feuding to stop. Despite students' acknowledgement and involvement in the crimes committed, no one confesses to abducting Bobbie.Cynthia Connell, the home and garden reporter for the local newspaper, decides to do an exclusive on Rebecca and her friends. In the process of joining Rebecca during her sleuthing, Cynthia meets Guy. The two have an instant liking for each other which warms into a meaningful relationship. (Throughout the remainder of the story, their relationship deepens.)The case is solved with the help of an eccentric, elderly woman who lives across the highway from Guy Thomas's neighborhood. For the two years since Guy had met Miss Dobbs, he thought of her as an unfriendly, unstable "fruit cake." He is pleasantly surprised when he gets to know her. Both he and Miss Dobbs learn to not judge people by their looks As in all of Rebecca's cases, this mystery is resolved with a happy ending. Bobbie finds his way home during a Monsoon, wet and bedraggled, but unharmed. He sniffed his way home by the enticing smell of one of his favorite treats left along the side of the highway from the Fremont Junior High to Guy's house. Miss Dobbs had suggested it and to everyone's delight, it worked.
