Justin is a rich white man struggling with his people's past. As a volunteer at St. Francis Home for Colored Orphans in Savannah, Georgia, he meets the forbidden Theresa Brown.

Theresa, like most Black women in George during the Jim Crow period, struggles to survive. She has secured a job as housemaid in the home of a wealthy judge and hopes life has turned a corner for her. She has no intention of letting the cocky volunteer at the orphanage get in her way.

Entering the family dining hall, Justin fills with excitement. The lovely Theresa Brown is serving his family. However, the lustful looks she receives from his brothers and his mother's subtle hints that his uncle will be delighted with Theresa made Justin ill. Had his advances to her been as disgusting to her as his family's innuendoes were to him?

Leaving the Attwood household, Theresa knew, was the right thing to do. So why was she now letting Justin's sister convince her to attend the school he had set up for adult Blacks? Interracial love was not only illegal in Georgia, but the Klan also felt it was their duty to destroy it.
