A Great Survey Text If You Get Past The Prior Pedantic Criticism

Porter does a wonderful job of bringing together a survey of some of the most seminal texts used in the history of philosophy. These texts are to support various ethical positions, and Porter weighs the pros and cons at the end of each position. The book is quite helpful for a survey lower-level undergraduate course. If you read the book, and answer Porter's questions to yourself; you will have a strong understanding of the ethical currents from 400BC to 1900AD. The proviso, 'This book is not an antidote to suicide' is meant as a joke in reference to its title. It is a suvey of all the reasons Western thought has tried to conceptualize in terms of what constitues the good life, how one knows that (hence REASONS), and how one is to carry out such a task. If someone has an axe to grind against academia, it certainly shouldn't be based off of a play on the word 'reason,' rendered in the common venacular...
